Do you know the Rules?
If you are unsure about the regulations around using your mobility equipment, we have summarized a few key points for you here...
WHERE CAN YOU GO?
Outdoor Area Examples:
- You can travel anywhere a pedestrian can go (as long as it's safe!)
- Footpaths where available
- Walking paths
- OR, if there isn't a footpath available, you can travel on the right-hand side of the road closest to the verge as possible facing oncoming traffic. We know this sounds counter-intuitive, but you can see approaching traffic and move out of the way. If traffic is approaching from behind it is hard to see or hear vehicles approaching.
Indoor Area Examples:
- You can travel anywhere a pedestrian can go (as long as it's safe!)
- Shopping centers small and large
- Supermarkets are ok too. Just check before you head in that your mobility device can fit down the aisles and out of the checkout.
- Your local store (again, check accessibility beforehand so you don't get stuck at the checkout).
MODIFYING YOUR MOTORISED MOBILITY EQUIPMENT
- Please don't modify it to go faster than the factory settings!
- All motorized assistive technology equipment is set to go 10km/hr or less.
- If your device travels faster than 10 km/hr, it is classified as a motor vehicle and requires registration and a license.
- Illegal modifications must be reverted to the original speed at 10km/hr or less.
DO I NEED A LICENSE TO DRIVE A MOBILITY SCOOTER OR WHEELCHAIR?
- No, you are considered a pedestrian so long as your top speed is 10 km/hr or less.
